Workshop on Safety and Reliability of Industrial Products, Systems and Structures, 13th May 2005 - Lisbon, Portugal

The SAFERELNET Thematic Network is concerned with providing safe and cost effective solutions to industrial products, systems, facilities and structures across different sectors. Several industries are faced with similar problems requiring solutions that are compatible with new work organisation, including the extended use of information technologies, and which are at the same time environmentally friendly. Furthermore, the safety and reliability aspects, which are critical to efficiency and cost, need to be ensured not only in the design and manufacture phase but also during the operational and ageing phase of the products and facilities.

The SAFERELNET Thematic Network is funded by the GROWTH programme of the Commission of the European Communities. The network is co-ordinated by Instituto Superior Técnico and involves 74 organisations, from 19 countries with a combination of 37 industrial partners, 23 Universities and 14 Research Organisations.

The scope of the project is the integrated treatment of the important aspects of design, production, operation of industrial products and systems. The main emphasis is on the use of reliability based methods for the optimal design of products, production facilities, industrial systems and structures from the point of view of balancing the economic aspects associated with providing predefined safety levels, with the associated costs of maintenance and availability.

The Network aims at improving the coherence of the approaches adopted by the different industries to deal with the above-mentioned problems, in particular as concerns RTD and demonstration activities. It will also assess the importance and maturity of the technologies being developed and will contribute to the technology transfers among the sectors.

The Workshop aims at presenting an overview of the current thinking and methods advocated by the Network as concerns Industrial Safety, the Treatment of Human Factors and the planning of Production Availability, related with Maintenance.

Workshop on Integrated Risk Assessment & Network Steering Committee Meeting 22, 23 September 2003, Denmark

A workshop on Integrated Risk Assessment will take place on 23rd September at Risř National Laboratory in Denmark. The main objective of the workshop is to discuss the planning of the preparation of the framework document on Integrated Risk Assessment, which go across Workpackages 2 to 5.
The objective of bringing the discussion of the document at this stage is aimed at helping converging to the final product that has to be delivered in a not so long future and preventing that different task leaders may diverge in their individual efforts making more difficult the convergence at a latter stage.
The output that is aimed for this workshop is to have an indicative table of contents for the document to be produced and time schedule and responsibility assignment. This objective will lead the various WP and Task leaders to plan their activities in order to make sure that they will come to the aimed results at the desired time scale.
In conjunction with this workshop, a SAFERELNET Network Steering Committee Meeting will take place The objective of this meeting is to plan future activity of the network as there will not be such a meeting during the next general SAFERELNET meeting of October 2003.

Second SAFERELNET General Meeting, 16-17-18 October, Zurich

The second general meeting of the SAFERELNET thematic network Meeting took place in Zurich between the 16th and 18th October 2002. Over 70 representatives from 54 organisations attended the meeting hosted by Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (Attendees)

The main objectives of the meeting were to:
 • Present the status and results achieved from each of the WP's in the first year. (Afternoon of 16th October.)
 • Meet the new Members so that they can be introduced to others at the level of Workpackages in order to organise the joint work.
 • Present the work completed in the first year. (Whole day of 17th October)
 • Organise workpackage meetings to plan the work for the future in particular the next 6 months.
 • Organise a Steering Committee Meeting to plan the future work including the revision of the Workprogramme and the next Meeting.

Day 1 was devoted to the introduction of the new members to the status of the project. Day 2 was wholly devoted to presentations reviewing of the work that has been performed by the various Workpackages in the first year of the Network.
Day 3 was devoted to parallel Meetings within each Work Package (morning), to plan the work with the members, and to a Steering Committee meeting (afternoon), to plan the work in the following months

The objectives of the parallel sessions were to:
 • Review and prepare plans for finalisation of the first set of deliverables based on discussion from the earlier sessions, input from the members and EC + Auditors.
 • Agree on the plans for the second year of activity.
 • Plan the next Project Meeting.
 • Present/Discuss matters of general interest to members of the WP’s.

Kick-off Meeting, 3-4 December 2001, Lisbon

SAFERELNET Thematic Network was launched at a two-day Kick-off Meeting held in Lisbon, in early December. Over 50 representatives from 40 organisations attended the successful meeting hosted by Instituto Superior Técnico, co-ordinator of SAFERELNET.

Several aspects were discussed, as the importance of establishing clear goals whilst counting on the active participation of all members. Additionally, the Thematic Network (TN) should show that results are being produced and the European interests as well as industrial interests are being met. Methodology that is eventually found must be applicable to all industries, with the transfer of technology a priority.

As all industrial sectors were represented in the Network, the first main challenge of the Network will be to extend the membership to the sectors that are missing. More participants would be welcome from the process industries and building sector and the TN will also be open to additional ‘Observers’.

An updated Website was recognized as an important instrument for dissemination and will help to maintain the necessary openness. It was also underlined that publications need to be made available to industry as well as to the scientific community. To promote communication and information transfer between Network members, a members' area will be created, in SAFERELNET’s web page.

Contacting ongoing projects, conferences and organisations in the same thematic field and maintain a continuous flow of papers and dissemination material would also be beneficial for the project.
