 Safe Offload
SAFEOFFLOAD (Safe Offloading from Floating LNG Platforms) addresses the new floating structures for production of LNG and in particular the critical aspect of the offloading operations from these platforms to shuttle gas tankers that will transport the natural gas from the platforms to the terminals onshore, which pose serious problems related with safety. Attention is also given to loading and offloading moorings.
To ensure a safe operation it also includes the development of a decision support system that monitors continuously on site the wind, wave and current conditions and combines this information with weather forecasts and manoeuvring simulation models to provide decision support about the safety of the offloading operations. This activity, which is not the main objective of the project, but is one of its parts, fits within research domain 4.12: developing technologies to sense and predict natural and infrastructure conditions affecting safety and efficiency of transport operations.
The project addresses the European Commission’s research objective 2 on “Advanced design and production techniques” of the priority 1.6.2 Sustainable Surface Transport, in particular the research, technological development and integration aspects of it.
In this topic it addresses research domain 2.2 on “Application of advanced design and manufacturing techniques used in vehicle production and infrastructure aiming at developing clean, silent, safe and comfortable products and services with reduced operational cost and energy consumption”. In addition, activities will support the development of new product generations enabling Europe to strengthen its competitiveness or for certain categories of products to regain competitiveness (e.g. guided vehicles, floating structures, RoRo passenger vessels and ferries, gas tankers).
